During the week of Canada Day, July 4 to 7, the Ottawa School of Art is offering a new art course for children aged 9 to 12. Two local artists, Maria Gomez-Umana and Anamaria Gomez-Upegui, have designed a fun-packed program with different activities every day, such as fantastic animals, mobiles and self-portraits. The two artists are already collecting materials for the workshop: plastic containers, cardboard boxes, plastic and wood pieces, yarn and fabric, linoleum flooring tiles, etc. The students will be using glue guns, pliers, wire, screws and bolts. During the week of the workshop, The Ottawa School of Art will have a bank of materials to complement supplies brought by participants.

The children will see samples of art made with up-cycled materials, such as the mobile Snobird which was at the National Gallery of Canada during the recent General Idea exhibition, a flock of flying birds made of polyethylene bottles. Children will also learn about the work of Joyce Weiland, the Canadian artist who worked using upcycled materials. The Ottawa School of Art is located at 35 George Street in the ByWard Market.
